Guidance
for Tax Practitioners Assisting Clients Affected by Fraud
The ATO has complied some practical guidance for tax practitioners to assist clients that have been affected by fraud,
including:
The ATO is currently running a pilot with clients who have been compromised to encourage them to get the strongest myGovID credential
they can manage. For those who can get to IP3, the ATO encourages them to log into Online
Services for Individuals and lock in their
credentials meaning a fraudster cannot impersonate them using a lower-level myGovID in ATO online services. The other big benefit is
that the ATO can ‘uncompromise’ their account, which is a much better experience for them. The best way for clients to
protect themselves is to make sure they have strong security and guard
their myGovID.
